  • What makes it Couture?

These days this word seems to be carelessly used by every sewist or brand that's just creating cut and sew ensembles for private clients.... yes there is a category called bespoke. You can create something bespoke but what makes it "Couture"? Can we call any bespoke outfit "Couture"? Starting with first Couture house in 1858 there has been some unique features that makes it Couture & luxury that is devoted to handmade! Either a collection inspired by a theme or be it made to order for a bride or customer a couture design always starts with a sketch and follows with a toile with custom fitting process. Since the fabric it utilizes is very expensive and luxurious no designer ever cuts a couture design directly. Once the type is fitted the adjustments made then the designs is mostly hand drawn for surface detailing on the toile itself. This allows the designer to better understand the design on how it will look on the body. Once the basic work is done most couture creations will have separate lining and understructuring that is required as a base. A couturier works and builds the under structures first. Next the actual fabric is cut in panels and basted and the surface design is drawn on the fabric and then beaded/embroidered/handpainted. This is a time consuming process and can take up to weeks or months even! The detail is always done by hand and fast methods such as printing, machine embroidery are not included in couture! Sadly many patrons are not aware of this and fall prey to certain designers who insist printed and machine embroidery means couture. Also a design is always made for a collection or a patron individually and custom designs are used for each. Embroidery or lace purchased on retail from India or other countries and then sewn into a design will not fall into the category of Couture either. Again due to lack of awareness most patrons are mislead to believe because it was purchased from India ( not sharing its freely available) it can be labelled as Couture! Once the embroidery is done it's a step by step process in hand sewing and fitting and making small adjustments and finishes to get the ultimate look. A couture outfit will take months and possibly 4 to 5 fitons including toile!!! The patience and participation of the patron is a must as it is a creative art piece made just for her! At the end of the day the creation that is the result is based on a lot of hard work and many hours of labor and creative thinking and execution to achieve that dream! If you want to get a unique couture outfit give about 6 -12 months and get in touch with us on info@yasisurikiribandara.com ! We will make something truly unique for you!

  • Heritage calling---- our latest line pays homage to my Kandyan background

As a designer all of my collections are inspired by my own background and you. In this collection after years of contemplation so much of design and development I am finally launching the line that seems close to my heart. It is mainly inspired by my heritage from my great grandmother to my grandmother. My mom always spoke about how certain dress methods and traditional techniques used by my late great grandmother she had witnessed and loved as a child. As a child I personally have witnessed how my grandmother would wear a kandyan saree within a few minutes in an expert style. This always was so fascinating to me as I watched her drape a floral yellow and white kandyan ( rather modern) and style her hair in a perfect coiff The collection connects the dots between this heritage and connects it with architectural motifs from our own art ( some of it I found in my house) and the freedom of a forgiven spirit....which is my signature style...... The collection has used handpainting by silk, batik and embroidery to bring forward the techniques in a modern version yet not straying too far away from heritage itself. This collection gives me immense joy and I hope you enjoy it as much! Keeping alive our heritage and history yet moving forward in time...... Do follow our releases as we create more and more designs in this line for the lover of the heritage kandyan!! I am not going to deviate much from the original sihouette in an attempt to pay respect to the original silhouette we have come to love and respect so much. A Kandyan is a unique standard of history, culture, heritage and the very essence of being of a Sri Lankan Bloodline. Despite religion or race all Sri Lankans around the world identify with this unique deisgn style that is so very Sri Lankan!!! You can order your own custom design or or order from this line as we will be releasing more designs in the future...... Here are some...

  • What is your wedding style?

When planning your wedding, an intimate destination wedding, or even an elopement, choosing a wedding theme early in the planning process is essential! This makes it so much easier to streamline your bridal style, to your bridesmaids and the decor and overall vibes into a theme. Without a wedding theme, it will be hard to create a cohesive look and feel. But don’t worry, finding your style is easier than you may think. LET’S START BY ASKING THE RIGHT QUESTIONS: Do you want to have a big wedding or a smaller, intimate one? Do you want to get married in your hometown, or would you rather fancy a destination wedding? Where would your dream wedding take place? Indoors or outdoors? In a ballroom, a quaint garden, or by the beach? What’s your favorite season and why? How formal would you like your wedding to be? Black-tie, semi-formal, or casual and laid-back? LET’S DIG A BIT DEEPER TO FIND YOUR WEDDING THEME: What words would describe your dream wedding best? What reception meal style would you love to have on your wedding day? Plated sit-down dinner, family-style dinner, buffet, grazing stations, or even a picnic? What music would you love to play during your ceremony or reception? ALL ABOUT YOUR STYLE: Do you have any favorite flowers? What are your favorite colors? What’s your home decorating style? What’s your go-to outfit? Once you’ve answered all these questions, your wedding style will quickly fall into place. Step 2: Do the Research Now is the perfect time to go crazy on Pinterest, blogs, or in magazines. Don’t limit yourself to wedding-specific sources. Think outside the box, such as home decor or travel blogs and magazines as well. Look for flowers, colors, and textures. Go even further and get very specific looking for stationery, typefaces, favors, cakes, wedding fashion (including shoes), hairstyles, hair accessories, ring boxes, aisle decoration, wedding arch styles, and signage. Once you have gathered some ideas, look for similarities in the pictures you are most drawn to. What do they have in common? Is it a particular color, a style element, a specific dress or suit style that shows in every image? You will soon notice an overall look and feel that you love most and can quickly delete all images that don’t fit your favorite style. Tip: If you use Pinterest boards to organize your inspiration, save all the images in one board but have different sections for each category like for the ceremony, reception, flowers, decoration, cake, stationery, fashion, etc. Also, have one section, which is your overall mood board, and in which you only put your most favorite images of each section. This way, you stay organized throughout the planning, and once you start working with vendors, you can communicate your style and ideas effortlessly. • Destination Bride 23/24- Inspired life....

Probably the most ambitious and unique bridal collection todate. I was inspired by The Lord to create something that I felt was profound yet so simple. A simple flower floating on water captured my eye sometime back during my travels within our beautiful motherland. This image stayed in my heart and mind's eye for long and I wanted to create something from it. What started as a single design somehow has expanded into a 12 piece collection and still growing.... Our island home has been facing much adversity and issues and hence I wanted to capture the essence of something so prevalent here... foliage and water..... This collection speaks to any beautiful woman looking to feel and look special on her wedding day! There are so many pieces that you can connect with from dresses, skirts, lehengas, sarees and kandyans too. We have added panels and capes and veils and belts for that added oomph factor. Each flower is handmade, hand-cut and hand-beaded. All beads handsewn. Our fabric is a mix of tulle, silk and satin We wanted to capture the movement of water and flowers floating upon it. Even the jewellery was handmade specially! The dressing of the model was luxe simplicity with a simple contour to bring out the luxurious look. We even added colours..... silk hand-painted some designs and hand dyed and batik application was made on some . Do make an appointment and drop by and check them. But before you do so hope you already have the venue and date finalized too!! Send us a message or email info@yasisurikiribandara.com or whatsapp +94777464356 or book an appointment right here

  • Planning to get married in Sri Lanka this year? Here are some tips to help you.

Here are some helpful tips that may make it easier.... Location - This is probably the most important of all. The right location will make it extra special and Sri Lanka boasts of so many! Be it the hills, the ocean front or even tea estates... you have your pick. Best is to work with a renowned travel agent to make the connection. These days there are hidden gems where you can rent an entire villa for your wedding party or even have that extravagant wedding at a 5 star hotel in Colombo. Colombo our firm favourite is Cinnamon Lakeside, Galleface hotel to mention a few. If out of Colombo Tea trails, Earls Regency, Kandy, Weligama Bay, Sheraton Kosgoda are a few we love. Food - Whatever the location Sri Lanka boasts of so many options. Most hotels are well versed in a decent continental fare and local and regional options. Sri Lankan food is highly flavored and many of our destination wedding parties love the burst of flavour it carries. Best is to come a little early and book some appointments for taste testing. It is easier to have the location bear the responsibility of the food but there are external caterers who can perhaps add more value. Outfit & dressing- While most brides carry their outfits with them , there maybe mishaps last minute changes or perhaps the bride prefers to buy from Sri Lanka itself in keeping with the whole vibe. There are many outfits you can choose from and we at Yasisurie offers both the outfit and the dressing of the bride and retinue. Most of our brides contact us while they are overseas and meet us when they arrive in Colombo. We are located in a suburban area in Colombo making it within easy access from many areas. You can arrange for a fitting and makeup trial beforehand so we can choose the right look for you without any surprises on your special day. We also have a readywear selection that can be pre-ordered in any size if you don't want to get a custom design you can always get from our collections available. 4. Wedding planner - A wedding planner can make life so much easier for a bride especially one who is travelling. It is imperative to choose from a planner who will work with all parties to make life easier for you and understands your vision and respects all parties to do their work without micromanaging. There are so many we would recommend that we have worked with over the years. 5. Flower arrangements - Now this makes the location go from zero to hero and most hotels will offer floral arrangements that are fairly decent too. If not you could work with some private florists who are specialized in weddings. We can recommend some amazing florists we have worked with in the past too. 6. Photographer - Capturing the essence of the moments is a key requirement for any wedding. It is afterall the memories you carry.
